APS cancels 2021 season
The GC Marine Australian Prototype Series has officially cancelled its 2021 season.
With just one round having been completed in 2021, the series was going to add an additional round in December as part of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships at The Bend Motorsport Park.
However with a low number of entrants expected to attend the event next month, the APS Board decided on calling the season now.
The cancellation marks the second consecutive year the series has had to cancel a season after COVID-19 again impacted the ability for the category to compete at race meetings.
Category Chief Executive Officer Paul Trengove was disappointed the decision was made but believed it was the right call.
“There are a few factors behind the decision to opt out of the race meeting at The Bend, which of course meant we would have to cancel the 2021 season,” Trengove said.
“The most important thing for us as a category is to make sure that the drivers have an enjoyable experience at every round, with a competitive field.
“Of course it’s a difficult decision to make and we thank our loyal competitors for their support, as well as Motorsport Australia and the various circuits around the country.
“Hopefully we can return to some normality next year, with a bumper calendar at a wide range of venues. I know everyone involved in the GC Marine Australian Prototype Series is keen to get some proper racing underway as soon as possible.”
A 2022 calendar will be released in the coming months.
